A puddle under the fridge has three or four likely sources, and telling them apart takes about ten minutes.
Water on the floor around a refrigerator is worth acting on quickly — not because the appliance is in danger, but because your flooring and subfloor are. The good news is that the source is usually one of a short list.
1. A blocked defrost drain
This is the most common cause by a wide margin. Every fridge melts frost off its evaporator coil on a schedule, and that meltwater runs down a small drain tube to a pan near the compressor, where it evaporates. Food debris and ice block the tube, so the water backs up, spills over, and appears under the crisper drawers or on the floor.
2. The water line to the ice maker or dispenser
Plastic supply lines crack, compression fittings loosen, and the inlet valve can weep. If the puddle is toward the back and appears even when the door has not been opened, check behind the unit — carefully, with the fridge unplugged.
3. Door seals and condensation
A worn gasket lets humid room air in. That air condenses, freezes, and eventually drips. In summer, when Ontario humidity climbs, this becomes noticeably worse.
4. A cracked or overflowing drain pan
- Pull the fridge out and check whether the pan is cracked or sitting crooked.
- Look for a water line to the ice maker that is rubbing against the cabinet.
- Check that the fridge is level — a unit tilted forward drains badly.
- Wipe the area dry, lay a paper towel down, and see where it gets wet first.

Clearing a defrost drain properly means removing the rear freezer panel and flushing the tube — worth doing right, since a half-cleared drain simply refreezes within a week.
