A warm fridge with a perfectly cold freezer is one of the most common calls we get. In most cases the cooling system is fine — the air just isn't getting where it needs to go.
It sounds like a contradiction: the freezer is rock solid, but the milk in the fridge section has gone warm. It is actually one of the easiest symptoms for a technician to read, because it tells us the compressor and the sealed system are almost certainly working. The cold is being made — it just is not reaching the fresh-food compartment.
How your fridge actually cools
In nearly every modern refrigerator, cold air is produced in the freezer and then pushed into the fridge section through a duct by a small fan called the evaporator fan. A damper or air door controls how much of it gets through. If any part of that path is blocked, iced over, or not running, the freezer stays cold while the fridge slowly warms up.
The usual causes, in order of likelihood
- A frosted-over evaporator coil, usually caused by a failed defrost heater, thermostat or control board.
- A failed evaporator fan motor — open the freezer, press the door switch, and listen for the fan.
- A damper stuck closed, so no cold air is released into the fridge section.
- Blocked vents inside the fridge — groceries pushed hard against the rear wall will do it.
- Door seals letting warm, humid air in, which turns into ice and blocks airflow.
What you can safely check yourself
Pull everything away from the back wall of the fridge and make sure the vents are clear. Open the freezer and look for a solid sheet of frost on the rear panel — that is a strong sign of a defrost fault. Press the freezer door switch and listen: a healthy evaporator fan is audible. Finally, close the door on a piece of paper; if it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is worn.

When to call a technician
Defrost systems, fan motors and control boards need a meter and the right replacement part — and a fridge full of food does not give you much time to experiment. Manually defrosting with a hair dryer may buy you a day or two, but the frost will return until the underlying fault is fixed.
