A drum full of standing water is stressful, but the cause is often a coin, a sock or a clogged filter rather than a failed pump.
When a washing machine stops draining, the cycle stalls and you are left with a drum of grey water and soaked laundry. Before assuming the worst, work through the drain path from the easiest point to the hardest — most of the time the blockage is somewhere you can reach.
Before you start
Unplug the machine and put towels and a shallow pan on the floor. There is more water in that drum than you expect, and it will come out faster than you expect.
The five checks
- The drain filter (front-loaders): a small door at the bottom front hides a trap full of coins, hair clips and lint. Clean it every few months.
- The drain hose: pull it out and look for kinks behind the machine, and make sure it is not pushed too far down the standpipe.
- The standpipe itself: if water backs up when the washer drains, the house plumbing is restricted, not the appliance.
- The pump impeller: a sock or underwire can wrap around it and stop it dead.
- The lid switch or door lock: many machines refuse to drain or spin if they do not believe the door is shut.
How to tell if the pump has failed
Start a drain or spin cycle and listen. A humming noise with no water movement usually means the pump is powered but jammed. Complete silence points to a failed pump motor, a broken wire, or a control fault. A rattling, gravelly noise often means debris inside the pump housing.

Preventing the next one
Check pockets before loading, use a mesh bag for small items and underwire bras, and clean the drain filter quarterly. If your machine is more than eight years old and the pump has already been replaced once, ask your technician for a repair-versus-replace opinion before spending again.
