Ice makers are the single most complained-about feature in a modern fridge — and the fix is often free.
An ice maker needs four things: water, cold, a working motor, and permission from the control board. Take them in order and you will usually find the problem yourself.
The seven checks
- Is the ice maker switched on? The wire arm or toggle gets bumped constantly.
- Is the freezer at or below -18°C? Warmer than that and the harvest cycle will not complete.
- Is the water supply valve behind the fridge fully open?
- Is the fill tube frozen? A plug of ice at the inlet stops water before it reaches the tray.
- Has the water filter been changed in the last six months? A clogged filter starves the ice maker first.
- Is the water line kinked behind the unit — often from pushing the fridge back too far?
- Are cubes fused into a solid block? That points to slow production and repeated partial melting, not a broken motor.
Frozen fill tube: the most common single cause
If water dribbles instead of filling cleanly, it freezes in the tube and blocks the next fill. Thawing it clears the symptom, but the underlying cause is usually low water pressure at the inlet valve or a partly clogged filter — fix that and the ice returns for good.

If water reaches the tray and it still will not cycle, the module, thermostat or inlet valve is the likely culprit. Those are common parts and a straightforward replacement for a technician.
