Extended coverage is sold hard at the till. Here is how to work out whether it is worth it for the appliance in front of you.
As a repair company, we have no stake in whether you buy an extended warranty — we get paid either way. So here is the arithmetic, without the sales pitch.
What you already have
Every new appliance comes with a manufacturer's warranty, typically one year on parts and labour, with longer coverage on specific components — sealed systems on refrigerators, drums and motors on some washers. Many credit cards also extend the manufacturer's warranty automatically if you paid with them. Check both before buying anything extra.
The math
- Add the plan cost to any deductible per claim.
- Compare it against the realistic cost of the two most likely repairs for that appliance type.
- Consider the failure window: most appliance failures happen either in the first year (covered already) or after year seven (usually past the plan).
- Read what is excluded — cosmetic damage, misuse, and consumables like filters and gaskets often are.
When it tends to make sense
High-end and built-in appliances, where a single control board or sealed-system repair can run into four figures and parts are brand-specific. Also worth it if the plan includes annual maintenance you would otherwise pay for separately.
When it usually does not
Mid-range freestanding appliances, where common repairs cost less than the plan itself. In that case, putting the same amount aside covers the repair and stays in your pocket if nothing goes wrong.

Whatever you decide, keep your model and serial numbers and the purchase receipt together. Warranty claims stall more often over missing paperwork than over disputed faults.
