The turntable spins, the light is on, the fan runs — and your coffee is still cold. Here is what has failed, and why this is not a DIY repair.
A microwave that runs normally but produces no heat has a fault in the high-voltage circuit, not the controls. The most common failed part is the magnetron — the component that actually generates the microwave energy — followed by the high-voltage diode, capacitor or transformer.
Confirm it first
Put a cup of cold water in the microwave and run it for one minute on high. If the water is unchanged, the heating circuit is out. If it is warm but not hot, the magnetron may be weakening rather than dead — a common failure mode in units over seven years old.
Why you should not open it
The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave holds a lethal charge even after the unit is unplugged, sometimes for days. This is genuinely one of the few household appliances where the internals can kill you. Discharging it correctly requires the right tool and technique.

Repair or replace?
- A built-in or over-the-range unit is usually worth repairing — replacement means cabinetry and installation costs.
- A countertop microwave under $200 rarely justifies a magnetron replacement.
- If the unit is under 5 years old, check the warranty before booking anything.
- Sparking, burning smells or a scorched waveguide cover mean stop using it now.
